CSSS & OPAM Explained: The New SSB Stage-1 Screening
SSB Stage-1 screening has moved fully computerised. Two tools now decide who reaches Stage-2: the CSSS cognitive battery and the OPAM personality assessment. Here is exactly what each tests, how scoring works, and how to prepare - with free full-length mocks for both.
What is CSSS in SSB?
CSSS (Computerised Stage-1 Selection System) is the cognitive core of screening - the successor to the old paper-based OIR test. It presents around 70 time-bound questions across five sections, each with its own strict per-question timer, and the flow is one-way: answer and move on, no going back.
The five CSSS sections
- Working Memory & Selective Attention - flashing shape sequences, number grids shown for ~5 seconds, symbol clusters to count.
- Space & Form Perception - mirror images of figures (X) and odd-one-out visual sets.
- Pattern Recognition & Reasoning - number series, letter series, odd-one-out sets.
- Linguistic Ability - analogies, synonyms/antonyms and anagrams under a 16-30s clock.
- Auditory Discrimination - tone pairs, NATO code words through static, spoken digit strings (headphones).
What is OPAM in SSB?
OPAM (Objective Personality Assessment Measure) is the psychometric half of screening. It presents about 120 objective questions - Likert-scale statements, forced-choice dilemmas and situation-reaction items - to map you against the 15 Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs): Effective Intelligence, Reasoning, Organising Ability, Power of Expression, Social Adaptability, Cooperation, Responsibility, Initiative, Self Confidence, Speed of Decision, Influence, Liveliness, Determination, Courage and Stamina.
The three OPAM parts
- Part 1 - Profiling (~60 Q): agree/disagree statements, including deliberately reversed re-wordings placed far apart to catch inconsistency.
- Part 2 - Forced Choice (~35 Q): dilemmas where both options are positive traits - you must pick what genuinely describes you.
- Part 3 - Situation Reactions (~25 Q): everyday scenarios; pick the most active, responsible response.
How CSSS-OPAM screening is scored
Screening weighs both halves: cognitive performance on CSSS and a trustworthy personality profile on OPAM. The OPAM engine runs validity checks the old paper tests never could:
- Consistency pairs - the same trait asked twice in reversed wording; answers that disagree get flagged.
- Response latency - honest answers are fast (1.5-3s); over-calculating shows up in milliseconds.
- Lie scale - "I never feel nervous"-type items; claiming perfection is a faking tell.
- Straight-lining & extremes - answering all-3s or all-5s reads as artificial.
The practical consequence: an honest mixed profile scores higher than a faked perfect one.
How to prepare for CSSS and OPAM
For CSSS
Drill each section under its real timer - memory flashes reward attention discipline, mirror images reward instant mental flipping, series reward pattern reflexes. Then sit full-length batteries to build the 25-minute one-way stamina.
For OPAM
You cannot cram personality - but you can calibrate honesty. Answer fast, avoid extreme all-perfect responses, and stay consistent with how you actually behave. Practising under a validity engine teaches you what the board sees.

DefencePrep replicates both tools: the full 70-question CSSS battery with real timers, and the 120-question OPAM with the same validity checks. No sign-up, scores stay on your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is CSSS and OPAM in SSB interview?
Together they form the new computerised Stage-1 screening: CSSS is the ~70-question cognitive battery (memory, spatial, reasoning, verbal, audio); OPAM is the ~120-question personality assessment mapping the 15 OLQs with faking detection. Clear both to reach Stage-2.
Is CSSS the same as OIR?
CSSS replaces the paper OIR. It keeps verbal and non-verbal reasoning but is fully computerised, adds working-memory and auditory sections, and uses strict per-question timers instead of one shared block.
How long is the CSSS-OPAM screening?
Roughly 1.5 hours combined: about 25 minutes for the 70-question CSSS battery and the rest for OPAM plus briefing. Every question is strictly timed and one-way.
Can you fail OPAM by being too honest?
No - the opposite. The engine rewards nuanced honesty and flags caricature: too many extreme answers, unrealistic virtue claims, or inconsistent reversed pairs lower your validity score. Answer like yourself, fast.
